International-level track to be built in Singapore?

With F1 fever hitting Singapore in anticipation of their first F1 race in September next year, motorsports has gathered a lot of attention of late. This has resulted in increased interest in developing the national motorsports scene and since Singapore doesn’t have a permanent track (the F1 track is a temporary street circuit), plans have been put forward to build a new race track for cars and bikes, as well as a kart track in the same complex.<!–more–>

The Pasir Gudang Circuit in Johor, Malaysia has been the closest place for Singaporeans to get their octane-filled adrenaline rush but that could soon change with a 20-hectare area marked out for the development of a new motorsports complex. The proposed track(s) will be located in Changi, Singapore and are planned to be completed by 2011. The track is expected to be anywhere from about 2.8kmto 4km long.

The Singapore Government has called for tenders for the track and they set a requirement of the winning bidder having to host 3 International races a year. I suppose events such as A1GP and MotoGP aren’t out of the question, and smaller championships such as AFOS and other regional series’ would definitely jump at the opportunity to have the Changi circuit play host to a round of their championship series’.

For the karting track things are a lot less clear, with most reports mentioning karting or a kart track, only one has mentioned it in any more detail saying it will be a “Level 1” cik-fia track, and if by that they mean Grade A it would have to be at least a 1.2km track, so hopefully a world-class karting track is on the way!
