On Board Cams

Postby mlange » Sun Jul 12, 2009 5:09 pm

Just wanted to post here given that we have fitted some on-board cameras onto some of our karts and will be trying them out next week.

I think we will focus on the video quality and work on audio quality (which breaks up without external microphones) as a next step.

No videos this week but just attaching some photos of the on-board mounts which you can get your local karting workshops to manufacture in a few minutes from metal strips.

Nice set of onboard cameras you've got. I'm especially looking forward to see the footage from the SmartyCam. I think its only drawback is that it could do with a slighty wider angle lens?

hi Rock, Im not in a position to advise on Rotax or CIK-FIA regulated events, but we are running a Club race, i.e. a kampung race, where the rules are generally very flexible.

Like you, I would be curious (for curiousities sake) to know if adding an on-board Cam is okay for regulated events such as Rotax, etc ... Im guessing its not going to be allowed though.

Hi Mikko, we're keeping our fingers crossed that we get some good video from the SmartyCam. On really bright days, we noticed its possible to get overexposure on the sides of the video so it depends on the weather. We think the camera is great for in-car videos.

Some concerns on audio quality is we are using internal mike for tests this weekened - but I think we can find solutions for this with further testing.

Priority this weekend is getting a ballpark feel on how the videos turn out for an entire race.

If the scrutineer says it's ok, then it is ok. Some organisers might not allow onboard cams but I think more allow them than don't. As long as the mounting is secure it should be ok.

Here is a link to the video I captured from my on-board cam.

The video is located at the bottom of the blog post.

Didnt link it to anything much except MyChron4 for the RPM .... will try brake and accelerator sensors in future.

Squires machine makes and sell a small camcorder that works great for karting. Go to You Tube and keyword "Molly Helmuth" to view videos taken with camera.
