New Ignition From Rotax

Postby Mikko Nassi » Tue Jun 30, 2009 1:59 pm

Rotax has announced that a new Ignition with a higher voltage will replace the current one.

The ignition is designed to get rid of misfire that occasionally occurs at 10,000-12,000rpm or so, particularly when you're running fairly lean or have a small squish gap set on the engine.

This thread will be updated when they're available in Malaysia.

Power comes from the fuel+air, not from the spark. This just makes sure that the spark is always powerful enough to ignite that mixture, but it won't make the explosion any bigger.

But will it change the ignition curve :?:

We will have to wait and see

Rotax says:
Please note that the ignition timing has not been changed and therefore the engine with the new ignition coil with higher ignition voltage is still providing the same performance.

For me it still seems like a bit of a must buy item. Last race I had the misfire exiting a turn just as I had a run on the guy ahead of me. Without the misfire i would've gotten past him.

The same misfire also ruined my first qualifying lap. :|

If it slows you down even a few hundredths every time it happens it adds up ;).

hi

this really do sound like a must have for Max engine runners

but if i may ask, how do one differentiate the new from the current ignition ?

also, will the newer batch of engines in the future be fitted with the
new ignition or is it an optional performance part?

thanks in advance
:)

chanced upon this, and it seems to answer some of my qnn

http://sharkshifter.com/zc/index.php?ma ... cts_id=982

it reads:
Ignitition Coil 2009 Rotax Max
$442.00
New for 2009 Ignition Coil 265578 (green connector). Is replacing 265572 (black connector). Because of misfires which can happen during operating the engine in special conditions we are introducing now an ignition coil with higher output voltage in order to improve that problem. The ignition coil 265578 is of course legal in the ROTAX MOJO MAX CHALLENGE races.

Correct, the technical bulletin from Rotax says that it doesn't increase performance, just cures that annoying misfire that most of us have sometimes. problems is a new coil is rm1400 ++ so you're not talking about a cheap upgrade.

Any news on the DD2 coil?

The pdf only talks about the 125 Micro Max- 125 Max coil (265 571), but there´s a mention about a 266 750 coil for DD2 which is also high voltage.

Is that a new coil? Are DD2 already equipped with such coil? If so when did they start mounting that coil on the engines or when they will presumably do so? (I can´t check my coil cos right now I´ve got my DD2 150 km. away from home and the circuit doesn´t open till July, the 18th).

I don´t think Rotax have got their timing very right, in the middle of a worldwide financial crisis, to bring this plethora of changes.

You´ve got to make a living, I guess.

Thanks in advance.
