Hard, Soft or Medium axle?

Postby Geoff Green » Thu Nov 13, 2008 3:24 pm

Anybody have some basic rules on which axle performs better in what conditions?

I know it's not the advice you'd be hoping for but my experience is that "it depends"... on the kart, on the track conditions, on the driver ;).

With a Swiss Hutless Magic trying to get rid of excess grip on the rear as the track got more and more grip which was resulting in bogging and understeer I found that a hard axle worked best. The bogging was almost gone and the kart turned in a lot better.

In general most seem to feel that as a track grips up, you should go with a softer axle.

The feeling for wet conditions varies a lot as well, with some saying Soft is the way to go and others saying Hard. :?

Just to confuse it a little further Geoff, from our experience it varies with track as well. On some tracks soft is best in the wet, yet on others (same kart and driver) the harder axle works better... Haven't found much benefit in the hot n sticky conditions in going soft or hard. We now tend to stay with std and fiddle with other parameters.
you win some, you loose some and you wreck some...

Thanks guys - when we get a chance (in the rain) we will do some tests at Elite and at Sepang and let you know what we found.
