Old Mojo wet tires ok to race on?

Postby james lee » Tue Jul 08, 2008 6:27 pm

I am expecting a wet race next weekend.
Still have 2 sets of used Mojo Wets from last 05 World Finals ( package from purchasing Swiss Hutless Magic ). Used them probably for practice & 3 races last year. Tread looks 2/3 worn. Any idea if using New Wets will give better performace than a let say 1/2 worn sets?

There's an advantage but probably not huge - remember that in the wet, driving skill is probably more important than the tyres, set up etc.
But, having said that, you'll be losing in two ways:
1) The less tread there is, the less water can be moved so if there's a heavy downpour, newer tyres are a bigger advantage
2) If you've used them a few times, and they are old in terms of time then they'll have got harder

But, I'd still bet on you to beat an average driver with brand new tyres :-) although you might struggle against Mikko etc

I've found the old tyres to be quite good actually.

I mean in general the Mojo Wet tyres are absolutely shit in anything but very heavy rain (if you get that much at elite the race will be stopped for sure). In heavy rain at Sepang they worked beautifully - but even there the race was stopped when the tyres actually started to work.

That brings me to this:
In quite wet to drying conditions there isn't much to lose with an old set of tyres.

IIRC last year in a wet qualifying session I set pole. I finished 2nd in a race after a long battle with Mumford... and won or placed very high in a few other wet heats. All of that was on 2005 grand finals used tyres.

So to summarize: as long as there is some tread left I think you're safe using an old set. Personally I would feel more comfortable with a new set though ;).

Mikko, we had the 2005 wet tyres for that race too. In the following round that rained we had new tyres and they were not as good.

In AKOC @ Macau last month, we've been told that no old model of Yokohama tire can be use during the race.
I have to buy 2 new set of new model Yoko wet tires even I still have 2 sets of brand new old model Yoko tires (which bought last year @ AKOC race)

Has the tyre actually changed? As in the design? That's one thing that's good about the Mojo wets - still the same model it was 3 years ago.

If it is a different model then I guess it is fair enough because the old model is potentially faster so it would be a bit unfair to those that don't have old tyres. It does hurt the pockets though.

Perhaps a subject for a new thread there Gary ;). Edit - new thread it is.

Old mojos are fine to use as long as they have decent tread. I used old ones from langkawi in that race too.

The old yokohamas are different, im not sure on the formula, though the tread doesnt look as well designed as the new model, they are half and inch narrower on the front, and obviously slower on the track. I practiced on the old wets in macau and i had to fight much harder through the fast sweepers though the newer ones ones hold much more stable at the front which is probably needless to say.

I'll say the new Yoko is better than the old ones (appox.0.5 second faster, we'd different drivers using new and old Yoko at the same pratice section in Macau). BUT it's hard to say, the new ones worn out more easily.
