World Karting Championships in Macau

Postby Mikko Nassi » Thu Jun 26, 2008 12:02 pm

The FIA has just announced that the 2009 Karting World Championships will be in Macau.

This will be the first time that the Karting World Championships will be held in Asia.

What are your thoughts?

Personally I thought that the track wouldn't be quite up to the demands of a world championship safety-wise. There are a few places where you really don't want to have a crash. They do have time to make some changes though.

It is great to have a World Championship in Asia though. Unlike F1 the reason can't be tobacco money which prompted the initial move towards Asian races, but rather the FIA taking notice that karting is growing rapidly in Asia.

It's part of China. That's the main attraction...1.3 billion people and growing every year.

i think this is very exciting. It's the 2009 Karting World Championships! It can't get any better than that!! :D Now that Asia is getting into the global limelight, i think its very encouraging. I agree Mikko, i think the Macau circuit has to improve on its circuit. All these being said, once the track is done right, it will be interesting to see the race. And hopefully we'll have more developments in years to come.

Sounds good to us - we keep saying we should visit Macau so we may just do that next year - it will be good to see the top drivers perfoming in Asia.

It'll be great because when the Macau event was just the Asia-Pacific championships not many European factory teams wanted to take part because of cost I'm guessing.

Being the world championships almost everyone will make the trip that would've raced in a European event.

i agree with mikko, macau should improve the race track, especially the drainage system if in case it rains. my son franco and some of the junior drivers went about the track after the prefinals of the akoc were cancelled saturday and started piercing the drainage holes! most of them were blocked by dirt and mud. also, they have to provide for electric power in the paddock tents. karting is now in the modern and high tech age where almost everyone uses power tools, laptops and internet data. a magnetic strip would also be a good idea for those who don't have beacons and eyes for their alfanos and mychrons. regarding the safety of the track, i guess the cik should be in a better position to judge that one. though i noticed that the ambulance driver in the last akoc round seemed lost and didn't know his way around the track. he took forever to reach the accident areas. and lastly, the food in the canteen has not improved. we've been racing in macau for the past 3 years and it's still the same items on the menu. more variety pls. when everybody is busy setting up for the next heat, you don't have time to go to a mcdonalds or kfc outside and buy food. taxis are a rare breed in the macau race track. it would help a lot if they can improve on this area too. just sharing my thoughts, otherwise, the organization is quite ok in macau. cheers!
