Interesting Track Layouts

Postby mlange » Mon Jun 16, 2008 9:46 pm

Here is a track in Iowa that is built across different elevation and has different track features. Anyone got any other layouts to share?

http://www.61kartway.com/track.html

Over one half mile of twists, turns, chicanes, sweepers and intense elevation changes. No gentle rises here - this track is designed with the driver in mind and will test the tuning ability of most any good pit boss. Even the oval sits on a 25 foot elevation change. The left hander at the end of the long straight? It's a 45 foot uphill change in only 100 foot of driving distance. It's earned the nickname "Money Maker". After passing through the right handed "Horseshoe" you dive into the big sweeper the farthest point from the pits. It is affectionately known as the "Toilet Bowl". A 35 foot drop to the bottom, with a 50 foot rise back to the top. Next to no banking as you go through with the pedal hammered down. Bring extra shorts! And the final left hander before heading to the white Start / Finish line? Bring your best passing skills, nerves of steel, and a true knowledge of driving lines and owning the inside line.

Combine that with a lighting system specifically engineered for our track for incredible night time racing. Throw in the best and most consistent weigh scale you'll find at any track. An AMB timing system, radio and PA broadcasting, remote results monitoring via your laptop, free wi-fi in the pits, an oversized hot pit with 2 grids for lineups, and a huge pit area. And the final factor: one of the best staffs you'll ever experience racing with. In fact, a good majority of our staff on and off the track are Rock Island Grand Prix corner marshalls. And our main flagman has 20+ years of flagging experience.

All of that, with a strict adherence to WKA rules, and a friendly club atmosphere. We put the fun back in racing, and the track will put the skill in your driving and tuning ability!

I'm actually going to that track this weekend for a regional race. :)

Here's a good one we raced on last year for the WKA Nationals. 103rd Street is different because all the corners are banked and the giant bowl turn is the key to the track because its before this insanely long straight.

And an onboard video:

This is USA International Raceway in Shawano, WI. Its got some really sharp elevation changes and its basically like riding a rollercoaster. This is where the U.S. Rotax Grand Nationals are going to be.

That long backstretch goes down a hill and then you sharply go up the hill again when you start turning right. Its basically a scaled down version of Eau Rouge at Spa F1. Its probably one of the BEST corners of any track in the U.S. :D

Rock,
I will believe the Malacca track when I see it but being a Malaccan myself - sure I would wish this comes true.

TJ,
That USA International Raceway sure got me confused......I cannot even link the oval starting grid onto the rest of the main track smoothly. Starting grid on a curve will guarantee difficult fair starts!

For what it's worth, I think the Buckmore Park Track in UK looks quite decent too. http://www.buckmore.co.uk/content.php/13420

Somehow, the proximity of the trees makes this track appealling at least for me!

Why have 300hp when you cannot handle a kart's 30hp?

Red is what they normally run and what will be the layout for the Rotax race (I think, I could be wrong).

Blue is for the endurance races and some club races they have there.

Green is what they used once for the Stars of Karting event there.

That sure looks like a fun track, TJ.

I was watching a Youtube clip of kartraces at that track and thought the mini oval around the Start/Finish line was a convenient feature for a shortened Warm-Up/Formation Lap (rather than 2 full circuit rounds).

This brought me thinking to the new kart track that Singapore is building in the east coast and whether they have based circuit creation on what benefits karters or just a project to whomever is the lowest bidder. Keeping my fingers crossed that its the former.

Another "interesting" layout is the mirrored Suzuka track... where was that again?

I have been told that the circuit is almost complete - track, grandstand and paddock has been built. The Malacca state government is now looking to lease the track to a track manager. The quoted cost to build is RM11 million, so the rental cost is RM1.1 million per year.

I guess there is money to be made in building tracks but not in operating them....

Alex,

That's great news! Care to tell me where is the track and do give me some directions......from the nearest N-S exit ie. Air Keroh?

Btw, has anyone the update on the track James Leong is building? Hope it comes along well so we have another place to play...

cheers,
Jules

As soon as you exit the Air Keroh toll look to your right. You can see the grandstand and paddocks from the road...

Just got back from my regional race at 61 Kartway.

The track is really interesting. It has almost no straights, and the ones it does have are short. Most corners aren't flat, basic corners so logical kart setup doesn't always work. Its difficult to feel what the kart is doing because of all the banked, off-camber, and bowl corners.

A quick run-down:
Turn one is downhill and then it shoots back up to the S-bends there and they go down into the last part of the S which is in a bowl. Then you go on a flat short shot to the hairpin there and down the back stretch which goes downhill pretty quickly near the end. That tight left there goes up hill very sharply and the carousel is at the top of a plateau. Then you dive down hill sharply into that left hander at full throttle and come back up the hill for the right-hand kink. Finally the last tight corner is pretty basic and flat and then you go downhill again to the finish line. Its a fun track to drive, much like USA Internation Raceway, but difficult to pass on since you never really get going very fast so the braking zones are quite small.

By the way, I won the race by 3.5 seconds in case you were wondering. :D
