Hi Christias
Karting is one of those sports which can drain money from you like a boat (big hole in the water) and you might not get to do any serious karting at all! (Sailing is definitely like that!)
If you have a limited budget I would suggest you do not try to put together an old kart which you may never get on the track.
I'm not trying to pour water on your obvious enthusiasm - more trying to find a way you can enjoy some reasonably good karting without spending a lot of money and you are in control of how much you spend.
You would also be taking a big risk (physically) running an old kart with second hand bits.
In any case when you take your kart to the track (on top of what you paid out to build it) you will have track fees, fuel, oil and tyres etc. You need a trolley to put the kart up on when you are working on it and that needs to be transported to the track with your kart. (How big is your truck?) If you don't have transport then you have to pay to store the kart at the track.
Believe me you may think you will do your own maintenance but when your engine ceases up and you don't have a new piston and cylinder or the tools or knowlegde to do the repair yourself or your chain snaps and wrecks your sprocket and radiator in one go and you don't have spares, you will come to a short stop and already be a few thousand Ringgit down the pan. Then you will lose the obvious enthusiasm you have and we need people with your enthusiasm in Malaysia.
Renting a kart is one of the most economical ways of doing it - if you consider that for about RM200 you can have one hour of driving in a reasonably well maintained kart during the course of a day. Thats a lot of time in the seat and you must be pretty keen and very fit to do 6 sessions in one day!
City Karting have 125 2-strokes and so does Sepang - I think they will be as fast or faster than the veeeeerrryyy ooold kart you are suggesting you could get up and running.
My other suggestion would be - see if any of the tracks want a helper who gets track time on the rental karts instead of pay! (You don't ask - you don't get).
Good luck
Geoff

hey,
its great to see your interest in karting.
i started karting by getting a group of friends, about 5 or so. we shared out the cost to buy one kart. all the costs such as fuel, tires, track fees, etc is shared equally.
this way you would be able to afford to buy a reasonable kart and have friends to help you lift the kart, etc.

chrastias,

my fellow forumers esp Geoff gave u a good account of what to expect when it comes to a kart ownership....

If you are keen on improving, testing out the sports and enjoying the company of likeminded driver, - without breaking the bank - I can highly recommend you join my-kart who uses rental kart and makes a serious & well run championship. They race 80cc, 100cc and yes, even the 125 Junior Max but going thru the ranks needed for safety. Their races are 1st Sat each month and in a year - they run abt 10 races.....hard but fair racing, this I can assure u.

Go to www.my-kart.org to register and see for yourself.

hi ivan. i tried asking my friends already and what they said was that they dont want to waste money on go karts . They rather spend it on something else. And for me to buy my own kart is almost impossible as my allowance is not that much. Any other suggestion to start karting?

chrastias, if youre interested on buying a new kart, i wouldnt mind sharing it with you  , ive asked ck for a 2nd cosmic kart and swiss hutless its around 10k to 12k, so if we can fork out rm5k per person that would be good.

hi there chrastias,

if you are keen on karting and wanna start some where, i reckon you should start at my-kart (http://club.my-kart.org) like what jules said. it provides all the racing environment, and experience you need. i started there too; racing with those rental kart. started off with the 80cc and now racing with the 100cc. and now.. i have my own kart, a SH.

obviously having your own personal kart is good where you can set your kart to your liking and also to your craft of driving. but sometimes i love to drive those rental karts (100cc) because it is really unpredictable on the condition of the karts. so you have to adjust your driving craft to what kart is given to you. and that actually brush up your skills, i reckon.
