The series is inscribed as "National with Zone participation". I don't know the exact regulations but it should mean than karters with licenses from Malaysia or its neighbours are permitted. Foreign competitors must obtain prior approval from their ASNs.

Answer from Paul David @ KKS

"The series is what is called a National status event with Zone participation meaning that it is open to competitors from the Asian Zone of the FIA, that is, all countries East of Turkey up to Japan but excluding Australia, N. Zealand and the Pacific Islands. "

Cheers,
Jules

Latest e-mail from Paul David of KKS:

Dear competitor,

We regret to inform you that round 1 of the AAM Malaysian Karting Championship has to be cancelled due to the inability of the track operator to complete the safety requirements as specified by the circuit inspectors. A new date will be announced to replace this round. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Regards,

Paul David

Alex,

Thank for your note and posting it on the forum - I never got the mail from PD yet but was informed just this morning of the same from my mechanic and this was later verified with calls to Pakcik Kasim...

Oh well, let's wait for the new ASR then.

Cheers,
Jules

i'm offshore now and i've gone to great lengths to ensure that i am back to race in this event... now a few days before the weekend we are told it is cancelled due to safety requirements...

please correct me if im wrong, additional tyre barriers were not placed around the track? if that is the case, there are three days until sunday, placing a few tyres on a couple of corners is a 1 hour job and 5 minutes for an inspector to look at...

if the track operator won't take action, can the club step in toensure the track is safe for its members to race on? why should a whole event be postponed, it's not a good way to start the season.

how many tracks are actually approved to race on now in kl???

KKS is running a separate race series from RMC Malaysia this year. Cadet 60 cc, Junior Yamaha and 125 Open.

Perhaps Mikko can post a link to the regulations here.

Guys,

for interest of safety - I think this postponement is warranted. yes, indeed the RMC Rd 1 was run and all those there would remember the poor singapore driver who went into the fence and broke his arm....

It is exactly this place where additional tyres barriers are needed.

well, for my peace of mind - i dun mind waiting for a few weeks, and yes it should not take long if the new operator puts effort into it!

jules,

we had two similar accidents maybe 3 /4 years ago. Goran in the veterans came off on the second last corner at sepang (left hander) and went into the fence and got stuck where there were no tyres, he said he thought he was going take his head off, that led to him not racing anymore. There was a junior who went off in the same place in the same way and was also stuck under the fence... havent seen him around since then.

putting additional tyres around sepang track has been mentioned many times over the years since i have been involved in karting in malaysia, but no one has done a thing about it.

yes i agree we need more tyre barriers around the track but i dont see why it should take so long and why a race should be postponed.

how can an inspector deem a track safe to race on for 9 years then not approve it on the 10th year because it is lacking tyre barriers.
