We've used the MyChron for about 4 years. We got one of the early Mychron 3+ Gold and still use it. We've used UniPro and Alfano Astro, but are happier with the MyChron. Despite being a two box design, we've never had any reliability problems even after some ..erm.. submarine imitations in the infield.

It does what we need it to do in helping us identify the optimal setup and the ballast effect is also quite handy in keeping the bolt on lead to less than 25kg

I was told that the magnetic sensor spoils easily......and not cheap to replace.

Any such issues during your 4 year experience?

No Jules, we've never had to replace a magnetic sensor as yet. We can vouch that the Mychron is far more suitable for submarine activity than our engines. :drunken:

We have run 2 x MyChron 3+ Golds with integrated steering wheels on cadet and rotax karts for 4 years.

When we were running the comer cadet engine we had to replace a CHT sensor once - that's it in four years. We've always bought our AIM stuff through Laukaitis Racing in the US. I think you will find their pricing quite attractive.

Oh, and you need to keep a supply of fresh AAA batteries. You cant use rechargeable batteries as their voltage isn't correct for reliable running. You can get through a set of 6 AAA's in 2 days heavy testing and downloading to PC.

I think all the systems occasionally suffer from sensors going bad - the Alfano temp sensor is common for example... but usually you just have to clean it and put it back on a little loose and it works again. :).

I had a Unipro magnet sensor go bad last year - probably due to having a bit of an excessive kink in it. :D

Depends where and what you want to race - now and for the next few years. The mag sensor works off a magnetic strip embedded in the tracks. The homologated Malaysian kart tracks all have them, so the mag sensor is the best and simplest solution. With the mags you also get split times within each lap.

However, if sometime in the future you wish to race in Saraburi or Macau you will need the infra red.

Also the Sepang F1 track does not have magnets so if you get the infra red you can use it on your car or bike there.

So, get the mag first and add on the infra red as and when needed would be my advise.

By the way I am not a sifu but found out the above the hard way...

Alex's advice is spot on Zainy!

Having had a weekend to properly test out the Unipro software with the Unipro 6003 (with magnet pickup + wheel speed sensor + temp + rpm + Power Valve sensor) the software is ok.... I did have a fair few issues with some software bugs and annoyances showing up but it's not too bad. Some probs might be because I'm using Windows 2000 and not XP.

Using the speed sensor and watching the "Delta Time" data I was able to easily pick out where I was losing time after the tyres heated up for example - and I had a big problem with the chassis gripping up out of the chicane - if I got a lucky bounce to free up the kart I would instantly pick up a tenth!

zainy son.. :P

unless the tracks you race and/or test have magnet strip. go with magnetic. then add IR in the future. like Alex said some track dont have magnet strip.

Alex, macau install magnet strip in 2005. only the 1st year IR was used.

Miko, pls tell us more on the Unipro Power Valve sensor thingy. a feature i dont see on other brands i think.
