The regulations for determining the grid for pre-finals should be clearly defined too. They currently say:

Grid Position
...The grid position for the Pre-Final in each class will be determined from the total points scored in the heats with the lowest points scorer in grid number one. The starting order shall be 2-2-2.

The regulations do not say what happens if two or more drivers end up with the same points. I guess it could be whoever finished better in Heat 1 would start further in front or it could be whoever got the better qualifying time.

Whatever it is, it should be spelled out. This is to avoid invoking the dreaded oral regulations. ASR 1 for Kota Bharu stated:

...any Additional Supplementary Regulations issued by the Organiser whether written or oral shall have the same force as these regulations subject to the provisions of NCR 68.

Yeh, these arent the kind of rules that should be changed, so should be printed and firm for sure.

Message received from both Alex and Geoff. I will again look at the SR and see what can be done. I suppose we now have to spell all things out. I only hope that you drivers take the time to read them as I still get drivers coming to me asking if the race is 15 laps or 25 laps. This shows that they do not read anything given to them at all. This depending on information from the officials will have to stop. We try to cover all aspect in the SR and important reminders at the driver's briefing.

Looks like there is a lot of work to be done.

Yes, there were many who did not know that front brakes were permitted for Senior and Master even though it was in the 2007 SR...

Also remember that the supplementary regulations are just that - supplementary. Also have a look at the CIK regulations and Rotax Regulations. The tied-points after heats for example is explained in the Rotax Sporting regulations - qualifying result ;).

The supplementary regs take precedence over the rotax and cik rules.

Yes, but the oral ASR can be used to over-rule that. In the Malaysian practice the oral ASR has the highest priority.

James,

do we have any feedback from Rotax on the interpretation of "start" that they use? My investigations indicate that they support the CIK/FIA definition, but I have not been able to get anything in writing...

Glen,

I have relayed the questions to Rotax but have yet to receive an answer. I can only offer you this solution that whatever the answer I get from Rotax and if it involves changing the points to reflect the actual status, it is not a problem for me to do. Rest assured that it will be corrected once I get the answer.

I hope this will in no small way give some consolation to those who may be affected.

James

Points will be adjusted.

If you crossed the start/finish line when the lights went out and retired on lap one, you're DNF. Same as if you retired a lap or two or five later.

If you retired on the formation lap, you're DNS.

If you are classified DNF, you are -5 from the last finisher. If 10 people retired, they will all get the same amount of points (-5 from the last finisher).
