I was reading through a forum topic on front brakes in rotax in the kartingaustralia website.

Apparently, front brakes are allowed in some other countries in Rotax.

Will they ever be allowed in malaysia???

here's the link to the forum...

http://www.kartingaustralia.com.au/foru ... f=3&t=9862

it mentions 125max in the rules... however australia has their own rules not allowing the front brakes.

My understanding is that only the US allows front brakes in Rotax Max despite them being forbidden in the global rules set out by Rotax.

I'm against hand operated front brakes in Rotax.

Just a few reasons:
  • They add cost.
  • They add weight.
  • They make it more complicated.
  • According to some, they take away driver skill on corner entry.
  • There's been no need for them, why now?

Additional cost means less karters, as does things being more complicated - how natural is it for a newbie to brake with his foot and his hand? It's not just driving that seems more complicated, it's also kart maintenance - now you have 3 sets of brake pads that wear out.

They were introduced for KF1/2 I'd think because the weight of the karts went up while the top speeds stayed up. Maybe only rear brakes were considered not enough? In Rotax racing rear brakes have been enough since the category was introduced, there's no need to suddenly start using them.

Anything that makes it more complicated or more expensive for the newbie particularly is a bad idea.

I believe that the US karting association decided to allow front brakes in rotax Max for 'safety reasons'....although I'm bewildered how arriving just as fast at a later braking point for a corner adds safety :?:

Have you read the regulations Aaron?

Front brakes are permitted and when used only CIK- FIA homologated front brakes are allowed.

For non-gearbox karts CIK homologated brakes are the hand-operated type.

So according to the Max regulations hand-operated front brakes are allowed.

That's for Senior-max only, not for Juniors.

In the supplementary regulations sent out to all competitors you'll find a summary of the technical regulations, the more detailed regs are on the Rotax Site. Malaysia follows the official rotax regs.

They were legal in 2006 and 2007 as well.

In the Euro Challenge if you look at pictures you'll notice a lot of the drivers do have hand-operated front brakes fitted.

Imo RMC Malaysia and Asia should ban front brakes in seniors as well. As soon as one driver does good using front brakes everyone else will think they have no chance without the front brakes and will be 'forced' to buy them,
