New vs Old Max Airbox

Postby RocK » Thu Mar 06, 2008 2:42 pm

Every karting forum i been, have this topic and its heavily debated. Surprise we dont have any here.

I'm having a live debate on this too. I find the old is better on the low bit while the new is better on the top end. some says the other way around and some dont even feel any differences .

We did not find any difference in performance. However, the new one is better in the rain because water does not accumulate in the airbox.

I find it amazing hearing about all the 10ths of seconds i can improve by so many different things like new ring, new piston, repacking, airbox, softer axle etc etc etc. I never do any of these things I just race the way my kart is for the season so i think if i do all these things and get the improvement i hear about i will take 2 seconds a lap off my time and break the lap record.

Not much in it.

Theoretically the new one should provide for slightly better cooling because it blocks less of the airflow to the radiator, and that's probably it's greatest performance advantage I'd think.

I haven't done back to back testing with new vs. old so can't comment on the specific differences.

Thinking about it scientifically the inlets are still exactly the same, the bottom part is almost exactly the same, also the airbox-to-carb connection bit is the same. The only difference really is the shape of the top part of the airbox. If there is any noticeable difference I'm not sure how that would effect it differently at different rpm?

I think they have to be put on a dyno or an airflow measurement device to see if there is any difference. :D

Yeah the new one allows water to drain out better - with the old one a hole drilled on the bottom does almost as good though (this is a legal I believe).

Drivers with old and new are still at the very front of the pack, so it definitely isn't a crucial difference. No need to buy the new one if your old one is still in good condition imo.

Back to back testing has shown no measurable difference in engine temps or performance. In wet weather there is a theoretical benefit in the new style as it shouldn't ingest so much tyre spray. Dan reckons the new style LOOKS MUCH FASTER though and that's gotta be worth oh at least 2 - 3 10ths, right?

We're going to paint a chequered flag on ours - should be worth at least a tenth...
