RMC Malaysia Round 1 - 1st & 2nd March

Postby Alex Ritchie » Mon Feb 25, 2008 1:23 pm

Judging from the number of drivers practicing over the weekend the numbers will exceed last year's Round 1 in Juniors and Seniors. The races should be hard-fought. Great to see the entries from Singapore, Indonesia and India - Malaysia is re-building its reputation as the top regional series for Rotax.

We may see some 48 sec laps over the weekend, thanks to the level of competition and the D2s...

Yep, good to see so many people out. On the times, I'm sure we'll see 48.high laps - the D2's are fantastic and give so much grip. Mind, there's going to be some very tired drivers on sunday....

Being the 1st race for the season - I am very sure of that and many will suffer the dreaded neck collapse from the super fast last bend....

ALL THE BEST GUYS!

Wrong Jules - I was 3rd in the DD2's. I had a disasterous set of finals. In the DD2 my seat broke on lap 1 or 2 and the handling got so bad I thought I had a puncture. In the masters, I was "helped" off the track on lap 3 when I was in 3rd place. Lost half a lap but got back up to 9th to retrieve some championship points. there will be better days :-)

My weekend:

Tested the D2 tires for the first time on the Friday. They really are a step above the D1s. I'll write more in the D2 thread ;).

Saturday started nicely in wet and cool conditions and the track was dry by qual, but remained overcast so the temperature was fairly low.

My kart really liked the brand-spanking new D2 tyres and for qual they came in after one flying lap after which I was able to set 3 laps within 0.02sec.. all good enough for pole. Tried then to cool down for one lap and go for another but by then the tires lost their best performance.

Heat 1 Masedenal Ali got me a few laps in and kept ahead of me all race. I was able to stay close but no more than that. Imran was close behind me as well.

Sunday was the rest of the racing and unfortunately for me it was HOT which isn't ideal for the chassis I was running.

Heat 2 started bad with a few guys taking themselves out in the first corner and I steered well wide and lost a few positions. Then drove in a tyre-saving way and did calculations as to how high I need to finish to start on the front row. Figured 3rd it is and that's where I got. Had some fun overtaking a few drivers. :).

Pre-final on the start I dropped to 4th and then back to 3rd quickly but Imran and Masedenal were just too quick at the front.

In the final things were a bit closer and there was a bit of a lead change at one point as well... and I got into 2nd for a bit. Imran was then out in front while I was trying my hardest to stay with Masedenal. Although I was really close often I never really had even a half chance of overtaking.

Top 3 drivers' laptimes were within about 0.05 of a sec so it was fairly close on performance. :D

Now I'm really looking forward to KB!

Roller-coaster weekend for Ross Green in Juniors. Wet practice and not happy but by the end of Saturday - a dry track and things were going well - 6th in 1st qualifying.
Great start to Sunday qualifying and 6th on the grid for Pre-Final.
Steady start to the Pre-Final and up to 3rd at one stage. Then disaster stikes with a broken chain. Down in the dumps!
Started the Final in 18th with soft axle (thanks for the hint Ray) and steadily went through the field with a bit of luck avoiding accidents (hard luck on those guys) and finished 6th which, after post-race scrutineering became a podium 4th.
An amazing weekend for us and the D2 tyres were excellent.
Now we must all get stuck in to practice at Elite ready for KB.
Do we know which site will have the championship placings?
A well organised weekend - round of applause for the organisers.

Sorry John for my mistake....I left to wander around the pits after seeing half the race and never knew there were more excitement for you!

i reviewed my pictures of the podium award and yup - u were standing on the Step No. 3.

You did the double as well rite? ( Masters ) If I am not wrong.....you were at the tail end. Any stories to tell?

Anyhow - great effort all the same!

A wonderful weekend - big, competitive fields in Juniors, Seniors and Masters and slick organisation by the Club - resulted in an enjoyable and exciting weekend. It felt like an AMC round rather than RMC Malaysia Round 1. What a massive change from Round 1 last year.

A big round of applause to the Club, officials, marshalls and the medical crew. We hope the poor competitor who hurt himself gets well soon.

The Junior class was graced by the appearance of Kevin Susilo, a CRG works KF-3 driver. He set the pace throughout the weekend and drove magnificently - smooth, fast and without a single mistake. It was a pleasure to race with him and we hope to see him again in Malaysia soon. He set the benchmark for the rest of the field to follow.

Thanks to the foreign competitors who came all the way to join us. Hope you will stay for all our Malaysian rounds and bring more friends!

Finally, thanks to the drinks stall operator. The beers were nice and cold.

It was certainly one of the better events for a while with large fields, I had afew friends come along for the first time and they thoroughly enjoyed the meeting however that did make one comment and that was that the RM1 races were so boring with most of the time there was only 3 karting circulating and totally spread around the field, not the sort of thing you want to sit and watch for 20 to 25 laps. I really think the organisers should try to do something to increase the field or remove them altogether. I dont think drivers should be allowed to pull out of a race just to save tyres for the final, apart from racing for our own enjoyment we are also trying to make it enjoyable for our spectators

My weekend was just chilling in the grandstand watching the racing which was awesome. I got terribly burnt by the finals so now i cant put shoes on without my feet hurting.

Geoff i noticed your son drove a great weekend. congrats on the podium.
