Braking issues!...please help!!

Postby asho » Sat Dec 15, 2007 3:57 pm

hey guys..i have a few braking and powering issues..i am slightly confused...when you brake...you brake hard and then ease off rite?...so...after braking hard at first....do u jus release braking pressure gradually or do u come off the brakes completely and then coast to the apex and then power out?...m really confused...cuz...in one of the forums i read that coasting flattens the kart too much...so...u shudlnt be doing it...so can u please explain the entire braking process in detail....according to me...i think i should be braking hard at first...den release braking pressure gradually and start blending in the throttle....and also...i wanted to know when do u start powering after braking?...do u power onli when you are completely off the brakes or u can power when you have applied some braking pressure....wont the clutch start smoking?...please reply at the earliest!!....thnxx!!

It depends on the type of corner, the capability of the chassis and brakes and your own preference. Most karters brake as hard as possible while they are still going straight but hold the brakes on slightly while turning into the apex to get off a bit more speed and keep the kart stable.
What very few people do is use the brake and throttle at the same type (apart from maybe a quick "blimp" on the throttle to keep the revs up just before the apex).
So, the normal sequence is brake hard, turn and ease off. When you hit the apex you should be off the brakes and onto the throttle - at least partially. If you're still braking past the apex, you're in trouble :-)
But, you need to find out what suits you best - we all do it slightly differently.

No problem. The best way to learn is race and then watch other people when you're following them - you quickly see what they are doing and then can see what you need to improve. Have fun and don't think too much - just enjoy the driving :-)

The thing that bothers me these days is at my local track, none of the drivers brake hard and late enough. This is my local track http://concepthaulersmotorspeedway.com/track_map.htm and turn 8 is the turn where i catch every single person. Maybe my brakes have a better feel than everybody elses, but personally i think that everybody is just plain not braking hard enough considering most of us have corsa karts. By the way, braking zones are one of the best places to pass people and the key to fast laps. So try to get a braking point, and brake at the same spot every single lap, and if your passing somebody, try not to lock them up. And the most important thing in anything is, BE CONFIDENT!!

Sometimes you have to lock up the brakes to get the kart to rotate. At Dousman (David, not sure if you've raced there), the final corner is a tight hairpin (No-Man's Land) and I lock up going into that corner everytime otherwise the kart pushes.
