Speculation in the paddock is suggesting that McLaren and Renault may swap Kovalainen (and a large sum of money) for Alonso and likely put Nelson Piquet Jr in the second Renault. However, Briatore would not be drawn to comment at Interlagos.

Agreed!
But if that happen, Alonso + Renault, I don't think he'll get any chance to win the 2008 tittle. U can see how the Renault F1 car perform this year........

Exactly. I don't like Alonso. But I do like Kovalainen. He really sucked in qualifying today though.

Yeah he overdrove. But like they said, it happened in Canada too and he ended up 4th there.

Ron Dennis will only agree to release Fernando Alonso from his 2008 contract if the Spaniard switches to a privateer rival next year, according to reports.

Following the first meeting on Wednesday between McLaren figures and representatives for Alonso, the Spanish newspaper Diario As has put Red Bull and Williams at the top of the list to receive the 26-year-old former double world champion next year.

More talks with McLaren are expected in the coming days, but the 'As' report would explain why speculation of moves to carmaker backed outfits including Renault, Ferrari, Toyota and Honda has recently gone cold.

Alonso's manager Luis Garcia Abad, who was in England this week, played down links with other teams whilst talking to the British newspaper The Guardian on Wednesday.

"If that's what people are saying then they know more than me," he said.

The whispers nonetheless continued unabated, with Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport spouting the latest theory that a move to Red Bull for Alonso might also entice Ross Brawn to abandon his planned return to Ferrari in favour of the energy drink-owned ranks.

With Alonso out of McLaren there are a bunch of drivers probably wishing they didn't already have a contract for next year.

Who do we have without a contract?
I wonder if there's even a small chance at all they'd consider Ralf "Inconsistent" Schumacher? Not consistent enough to pose a threat to Lewis but would he start complaining too much and it would be the same story again?

Of course they're looking at drivers like Nico, Heikki, and Webber... seems no matter who they get it's going to be an interesting pairing to look at next year.

i see Ralf doing DTM next year.

my guess is Heikki will go to Meca, Alonso to Redbull and Webber to Renault. 8)
