McLaren have been stripped of their points in the 2007 Formula One constructors championship after the outcome of the 'spygate' row.
The team was also hit with a record $100m (£49.2m) fine but drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso will be allowed to keep their points.

The team's 2008 cars will have to be examined before they are allowed to race next season.

The drivers will also have been hit pretty hard even if it doesn't seem like it - if one of them grabs the title it won't really be a great one... tainted forever.

It just goes to show that Formula 1 is a business first and a sport second.

Honda were banned for 3 races in 2005 when they were caught cheating. Toyota was banned for 2 years from the World Rally Championship when they were caught cheating. But McLaren....

I dare say that the decision may have been different if Lewis Hamilton were not leading the drivers championship.

It is not a matter of using the info, the punishment is being in possession of it, i am sure if they actually used the information on there cars the penalty would be much tougher, and i am sure if you boycott the remainder of the races it will not have too much effect on the ratings or financial side of things

seem the word "banned" was not official. Here the full statement from the FIA:

Quote:
In an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council was held in Paris on the 12th of September 2007, The following decision was taken:

"The WMSC has stripped Vodafone McLaren Mercedes of all constructors' points in the 2007 FIA Formula One World Championshiop an the team can score no point for the remainder of the season *.

"Furthermore, the team will pay a fine equal to 100 million dollar, less the FOM income lost as a result of the points deduction.

"However, due to the exceptional circumstances in which the FIA gave the team's drivers an immunity in return for providing evidence, there is no penalty in regards to drivers' points **.

"The WMSC will receive a full technical report on the 2008 McLaren car and will take a decision at its December 2007 meeting as to what sanction, if any, will be imposed on the team for the 2008 season."

The full reasons for this decision will be issued on the 14th September 2007.

* Points gained by other teams so far this season will not be affected.

** No McLaren representative will be allowed on the podium should a McLaren driver win any of the remaining races of the 2007 season.

I actually heard they found evidence that McLaren had used some of the info on a test car one time.

Before the FIA ruling, McLaren led the championship by 23 points from Ferrari with four races remaining. Winning the championship would entitle it to $68.9m in prize money from FOM, according to figures published in www.formulamoney.com, meaning that its final fine could be reduced to $31.1m – less than a third of the original total.

I would bet $$$, information used from Ferrari were in regards of bridgestone tyres.

Data is far more important then copying design i think..

I don't get it how come everytime some nonsense like this happens the FIA always will support Ferrari.

I wonder if anyone remember a few years ago Ferrari were caught cheating when their wings were abit taller than spec.

Ferrari says it was a manufacturing error...
Let off the hook.
