Wasnt there a street race/demo in JB a few years back? I think Mikko said something about that. I've heard it a few times and many complained it was horrible mainly due to issues on the pavement such as those mentioned above.

I would like to enlighten everyone why street racing is not on at the moment. In the early 80's we used to have street racing as there were no purpose built circuits. I was a product of that era where I won 3 National championships in karting. Looking back at the safety issues, it was adequate for the races at that time. Nowadays, the races are run in proper circuits where a yearly inspection is done before any races can be run at that track. Most tracks have safety features that meets the minimum requirement of CIK and so it is much safer than a street circuit.
Running an event now on the street entails fencing off all spectators' areas, taking off kerbs and traffic lights. If the Town Council allows you to do so, I am sure AAM will agree to the street race. There is always an element of danger in a street circuit and thus the CIK is very strict in the ruling. A street circuit will bring more crowd like what the kapchai is doing. The organiser for the Kapchai series pays a hefty amount for the fencing. They have Petronas sponsorship while karting don't even get a single cent. Even as we tried to get karting off the ground in Kuching running on the street in the Stadium carpark we got burnt by the sponsors not paying us the balance of the money due. That's the reason why we will not do a street race in any part of the country as well as having any future race in Sarawak.

It all depends on the street circuit itself. If there are adequate run-off areas and the tarmac is good and there are covers over drains etc, your cost will only be limited to tyre walls or fencing. In the case of Kuching, major work was carried out because of certain areas was not considered safe. In approving the use of any circuit be it a proper track or a street circuit, there are guidelines issued by CIK. If these guidelines are met then there should not be any reasons for not approving the track for use. The quantum of money required lies entirely on the work to be done. I hope this answer your question - Rock.
