Karting Tyres - Choices and Prices in Malaysia

Postby pistole » Tue Nov 09, 2010 11:41 am

- hi.

- anyone here can help with sourcing cheaper tyres for practice ?

- eg , all the "major" brands (eg , Vega , Mojo , MG) , have very controlled pricing (which are all in the RM$7XX range).

- was hoping get access to a more affordable stream of tyres for leisure karters and also racers wanting to do practice/setup.

thanks.

Deli(Indonesia), MRF(India), Apexis(Taiwan).

In general all these companies make tyres that are a fair bit harder than the race tyres.

There's a few choices for you to get started ;). You can go to tracks with rental karts such as CityKarting and see what tyres they use - you could ask them to buy those tyres or to bring in some of that brand in their next shipment (possibly a slightly softer compound than the rental tyres). I think CityKarting uses some cheaper tyres on their rental 125s that aren't an incredibly hard compound.

Prices should be somewhere around 30%-50% cheaper than most race tyres and they should last longer.

The main problem with most cheaper tyres is that they can vary a lot from batch to batch (softer/harder compound), and from tyre to tyre (different circumference so you have to match your rear tyres to avoid massive handling problems). That's why it's impossible to use them for a proper racing series. But that isn't a problem for practice.

If you're planning to do setup though you have to do it on the tyres you are going to be racing.

Bridgestone YGK tyres - the same ones used for the senior class in the SL Cup - are available at Speedway Plus Elite for RM590. The performance and durability is similar to the Mojo D2.

I would like to just inform the public that Kartmore Racing Services is the Official Distributor of Bridgestone tyres in Malaysia. I note with surprise that Elite circuit has YGK tyres for sale. As far as I know from Bridgestone Japan, only YJL tyres were allowed into Malaysia under RL Karting STRICTLY for the Yamaha SL Cup races for 2010. These tyres are not allowed to be sold to the public.

I will have to check with BS Japan as to how you have YGK in your stock!

- hi James,

- perhaps a list of tyres for which you hold distributing rights to , and their prices would be helpful too.

We hold the rights to the following make of tyres - Mojo (due to us being the Rotax Distributor since Mojo is under Rotax), Bridgestone tyres and Deli tyres. For 2011 we will be bringing in to Malaysia in big quantities of BS tyres for other events which we will be organising. Tyres are expensive in Malaysia not due to manufacturing cost but the duties. We have to pay 40% duty and 10% sales tax on all tyres. This is nearly 50% of the total cost of the tyres. Unless the government review the duties for kart tyres, we will have to pay this high amount for tyres to race.

Deli tyres were brought in by us mainly on the cadet small tyres as we wanted to have a cheaper tyre for the Micromax races. Deli has bigger racing kart tyres and we brought these into Malaysia to supplement our sale of cheaper version karts that comes complete with tyres. The Deli racing tyres have been used before in events but drivers complained that lack of grip etc and ask us to sell better tyres.

Therefore you need to know what you really want. If you are just hobby karting then a relative cheap tyre will suffice. But if you want something better and readily available, then I would recommend the Mojo D2 tyres.

I'm not sure on the exact laptimes but I assume that the Deli tyres would be anywhere from 1 to 4 seconds slower depending on the track than Mojo D2 tyres.

TAG Motorsports,

Do you carry the HG3? we used them in the past and that was the tyre to have before the BS YGK came on board.....
Why have 300hp when you cannot handle a kart's 30hp?
