New Driver : Hard or Soft Tyres For Practice ?

- hi.

- am new into Karting.

- have just bought a CRG.

- am awaiting installation of the engine (Senior Max) and tyres.

- have been told that the tyres available at my local track (Plentong , Johor) at VEGA tyres. Compounds being soft, medium and hard.

- would appreciate advice on which compound would be recommended for a new driver , learning the machine and also the track.

- have been told to start out with hard (being that they make the machine more "lively") and the driver thus learns quicker. Apparently, with soft compounds , it "masks" driver errors ?

- am coming from a background of having tracked cars at Pasir Gudang , Johor fairly often (a couple of times at Sepang). So , basic things like track positioning, braking points , lines , etc , are understood.

- am just hoping to shorten the learning curve.

Are you planning to race? If so you should practice with the tyres you plan to race on.

Vega has a lot of different tyres, do you know the specific models that you have choices for which are Hard, Medium, and Soft? If they are the XH (hard), XM (medium), and XP (soft). Then I think the hard would be good choice for Rotax. There is no need to use the soft or medium.

The SL6 which is a harder tyre tyre than the XH is used in the UK for Rotax Senior so would be a good tyre to learn to drive a Rotax on I'd imagine.

Find out what tyre choices you have exactly - rather than just soft/medium/hard.

Soft tyres wear out faster, so harder = cheaper. ;)

You're right in that a soft tyre is probably difficult to learn to drive on. They are very responsive and as a new kart driver you'll struggle with how precise you'd have to be with your steering inputs. Hard tyres give you a bit more freedom to learn to feel the grip, but have to be driven just as well to be driven fast.

The official race tyre for the Rotax Senior in Malaysia and most of the world is the Mojo D2 tyre. Ask if you have that as a choice. I'm guessing that this is similar to the Vega XH or between the XH and SL6 in grip level (only guessing though because I haven't tried the Vegas).

- am definitely not going racing. Maybe the odd Sunday "race" which Louis organises at the Plentong Track , but nothing serious like RMC.

- will probably get a set of "hard" compounds initially , and work from there.

- i remember you from a few years ago (maybe many years ago) when you won (iirc) an invitational race at Johor Bahru held in conjunction with the then late Sultan's birthday. It was a street circuit thing held in front of the courthouse/postoffice , just in front of the sea.

- nice to see that you're still at it after all these years.

If you are planning to drive only for yourself you can use the Maxxis SLR. At the moment one of the most popular tires in Europe for this purpose.

If you think to drive international races and the tires is free use a Maxxis MM tire. They are CIK homologated.
