Ratio of Gears

Postby Trident » Tue Jun 22, 2010 11:31 am

Hi All,

May I have your suggestions on how to determine the best size of gears for a high speed track and a technical one?
I believe the rule of thumb is larger gears for high-torque and smaller gears for high-speed, but is there a definite formula I can follow?

Thanks for any help given.

There's no general rule of thumb - it varies on the track layout, conditions, engine etc. The best thing to do is ask around the people that drive the same track and engine for a starting point. After that, gauge changes based on the max RPM the engine should be doing and change the ratio accordingly - normally you want the engine to be getting up to a little bit below the maximum revs is capable of. It also depends of if you're talking about racing or just driving for fun. If you're just "playing, use a lower gearing to keep stress off the engine, it will last a lot longer :-)

This might be helpful. i used this to correlate my max speed at backstraight at kartright thus 85 is my preference allowing good overtaking at end of straight.Carmona is a high speed track probably guys there might be using 78. cheers
