I have tried to post a reply on this forum but somehow did not get registered. So I have to start all over again.
What is the difference between the Micromax and the Mini Max? In the earlier years around 2005 Rotax decided to introduce the Mini Max - a detuned version of the junior max to try to break into the market segment. The Mini Max uses THE SAME EXHAUST AND SAME RADIATOR AS THE JUNIOR ENGINE and uses a new exhaust restrictor as well as a carburettor restrictor. The Mini Max is slated for drivers age 10-13 years old. The Mini Max produces 10kw or 13.6hp. But the Mini Max engine using the big exhaust and radiator cannot fit into the Cadet chassis (950mm). Thus a new chassis 1010mm must be used. This same chassis will not be able to use as a junior chassis later on due to the size. So drivers wanting to enter or start this class will have to invest in new equipment.
The Micromax is meant as a replacement for the Comer 60 engines. Reasons for this are the ease of starting by electric starter, sealed engine, no carburettor adjustment like the Tillotson or Walbro. The Micromax produces 5kw or 6.8hp and uses the narrow tyres and the present cadet chassis 950mm. This give all the drivers an equal setup. The Micromax uses the same Junior max engine but with a narrow radiator, a single exhaust, carburettor restrictor and exhaust restrictor. The power range is the same as the Comer 60. This is the grassroot racing class.
The Micromax class was introduced in Malaysia in 2008 as a trial running together with the Comer 60. It had only 4 drivers in that class then. But in 2009 all the drivers switched over to Micromax bringing a total of 26 Micromax to the class. If Singapore's aim is to produce drivers to their F1 programme, then they have to look closely at the Cadet class. Having powerful engines and sticky tyres will not help the young boys to learn about driving skill.
