Rotax Malaysia/Asia 2011 Round 1

Postby Mikko Nassi » Mon Mar 07, 2011 6:25 pm

Round 1 is THIS WEEKEND at Speedway PLUS.

A press release from Dash Racing has hinted that Syazwan is one of the favorites in the Junior category. The track was already busy on Saturday, and Sunday as well I'd imagine. I'm not driving but I'll be taking pictures again and looking forward to it.

Entries for the Senior and Junior categories look really promising, the numbers were at 31 Seniors and 33 Juniors. There have been a few last minute withdrawals as well as a few entries, but both categories should be somewhere around the 30 mark!

Drivers will be in for a bit of a treat to start off the weekend:

All drivers will get a copy free of charge, and a digital version will also be made available. The aim is to launch a new issue at every Rotax Malaysia event this year. This means that a race report from the previous round and a preview for the coming round will be included in each issue.

The magazine will also cover other events - not just Rotax. It's not going to be a heavy ~100 page deal like Vroom and Karting Magazine, but should cover a lot of interesting stuff. Expect future editions to have a bit more content than the first one though.

An interesting 1st day for RMC/AMC in 2011 in all sorts of ways - and disappointing behavior by a number of people. A great scrap in the cadet heat 1 including a last corner ramming by one driver. An actual race in DD2 with a lot of bumping by one person who may well come to regret it later, a dry/wet/dry/wet junior heat 1 where an inspired tyre choice by Jet saw him zoom from close to the back to overtake long time leader Syazwan only to drop back to 4th when the rain finally came (although still a great choice of tyres by Jet and his team!). The seniors then topped it all with a very wet race packed full of incidents. Farriz Fauzy was the unluckiest driver of the day - stopping with only a few laps to go with a throttle cable breakage when comfortably in the lead. Some "afters" in the pit lane then led to 2 drivers being excluded from the meeting.

Quite how Mikko will write it up for the next edition of Asia Kart I don't know...

Some great racing today as well. The Seniors was crazy close with several lead changes particularly early in the race. It's a shame Farriz didn't have the kart at peak performance after a great pre-final drive and a good start in the final taking him to the lead. Great drives by the top 3 and nice to see Ang finally get a good result after all the pace he has shown in previous races.

Syazwan made the Junior final look easy, while the battle for 2nd to 8th was intense.

Nice drive by Shota to take the win in DD2 and also a good comeback by Kelvin to 2nd after some confusion at the start. What happened to Syazwan?

James did a great job to win in MicroMax after his trouble yesterday, and Luqman put in some quality racecraft to take 2nd.

Quite how Mikko will write it up

 "Bump bump bump, middle finger, bump POW bump... slap punch tackle kick dodge, stewards room, bye."
Sound about right? :D In all seriousness it's not really a joking matter. Doesn't belong anywhere near a kart track.

Gear selection problems in the DD2 - we replaced most of it after the heats but need to completely strip it and reasemble it away from the track.

The only problem with Syazwan's cruise in the Juniors was I heard one parent was making comments about the speed of Syazwan's engine (not Gilbert' - who knows that it's going to be an interesting season long fight and he just didn't have the set-up this weekend). Just like no-one could believe how easily Nabil won some races because of set-up and driving, it's easier to make false claims. So, I'll make the same offer James used to make about Nabil's engines - if anyone wants to come and buy his engine for the price of a brand new one, just send me a PM. The engine is a P10 bought from KRS at the end of last year so didn't need the special registration that some UK bought engines needed - and had all the bearings the right way around right from the beginning of the meeting .... and was extremely carefully checked in the post race scrutineering.

Anyone with any real understanding of racing who stood at turn 1 today will have seen why Syazwan was so fast - his kart was taking turn 1 like it was on rails and he was on the power WAY before anyone else off the corner. And he took exactly the same line every lap. Good chassis set-up, good engine and great driver = fast lap times, it's as simple as that...

Yes, I totally agree with John. It's always the same old tune - engine so fast must be modified!!! Please accept the fact that a good chassis setup would be better than a faster engine. All our juniors are new to the BRM and needed more track time to get to the settings but we will be there.

Regarding the come together of the two drivers, the penalty was US$1000 fine each and out of race. I as an Organiser of the event together with the Stewards will never condone fighting in the track. If at the next race these two drivers are at it again, they will be suspended for a year and loses all their licences. I wish to warn all drivers taking part in the Max races that the penalty will be much higher the next round.

There were a total of 11 engines that was presented to us for scrutineering but the engines were not purchased from KRS. A surcharge of RM2500 was imposed per engine and they were stripped to the barest minimum to allow the checking to see if they were modified. 5 engines from UK were found to have the bearings and oil seals placed in the wrong manner. After the items were put right, the engines were sealed and allowed to be used. I WISH TO INFORM EVERYONE THAT FROM THE NEXT ROUND ONWARDS FOR 2011, THE SURCHARGE COST OF HAVING AN ENGINE NOT PURCHASED FROM KRS TO BE ALLOWED TO RACE WILL BE INCREASED TO RM5000.

We need to put a stop to this bringing of engines from overseas to race here. I know some teams are so well sponsored that money is of no matter. But I want to think of those drivers who does not have that type of funding and cannot afford to have their engines balanced by so called 'experts'. If you want your engine to be dynoed, KRS can do that at a fraction of the price you pay to the overseas expert.

Just to emphasis this point, I sent 2 engines to the UK last year for tuning. They came back about .2 faster than the other engines we'd prepared and once we stripped them to fix the bearings, oil seal etc, that advantage disappeared. Cost was about RM3000 per engine. So, get your engines done by one of the good engine builders here - it's cheaper and faster - then spend the money you've saved on extra testing to make sure your chassis and driver can use every bit of power the engines offer.

Wow what a wonderful moments of the racing had been captured, it’s very attractive. It’s the moments of round 1 only and seems so interesting which is not easy to express in words. Information which is posted over here moment by moment force us to feel that we are also participating in the racing events. Really it’s a very hard work that while watching racing events someone can express their feelings in such terms, thanks a lot to the viewer who had posted this thread.
